Pero las carreras eran su pasión, por lo que en 1956 debutó en la Fórmula 1 con Ferrari, equipo al que llegó tras dos años corriendo en la Carrera Panamericana con un Ferrari Sport 3 litros. Su debut oficial fue en el circuito de Silverstone en el GP de Gran Bretaña. Esa fue la primera de cinco carreras en las que participó en un Campeonato Mundial.
En 1957 dejó la Fórmula 1, pero siguió su carrera de piloto hasta que el 12 de mayo de ese año perdió la vida en las Mil Millas de Italia, en un trágico accidente, donde pinchó una rueda y estrelló su Ferrari 315 S contra el muro de una casa, con lo que murieron doce personas más. El accidente marcó el fin de la mítica carrera italiana.
